ANNA'S HOME
ACRYLICS ON CEDAR W/RED OAK FRAME
SUMMER 2023

I love watching Anna’s Hummingbirds and am glad that many have chosen to stay year-round in our area.  They are a source of joy watching their antics as they chase each other around the yard and away from the feeders.  Greedy little guys who want it all for themselves.  Luckily that’s rarely the case and as soon as two fly off, a third one comes to feed.  The design for my hummingbird was influenced by a fusion of Northwest Coast Native, Celtic, and Japanese art traditions. The entrelac salmonberry background was inspired by Celtic Revival designer Archibald Knox.  I made the frame for this painting out of red oak using pegged, hand-joined, mortise-and-tenon construction methods.   I used the Japanese technique (shou-sugi-ban) of charring and oiling the oak to finish the frame.  I specifically made this painting for the Matzke Gallery’s “Honey, I Shrunk the Art” 2023 show.
