ACRYLICS & INK ON SHIKISHI BOARD
FALL 2024
Late winter, and although the sky is still dark gray and tree leaves are yet to sprout anew, there is still a welcoming source of color to be found in local gardens with the camellias. That shot of color can sure brighten any cold winter’s day. The over-wintering dark-eyed juncos are still around at this time, adding to the joy with their quick movements and antics: “jumping juncos” we call them. This painting celebrates both camellias and juncos at a time when the world is still hibernating. Inspiration for my composition came mainly from Rinpa artist Kamisaka Sekka, and I used a Rinpa-style tarashikomi-effect to paint the blossoms. The design for the junco was also inspired by both Northwest Coast Native and Celtic art traditions.
