ACRYLICS ON CEDAR W/RED OAK FRAME
SUMMER 2023
I painted a larger version of this in the Fall 2016 in the style of a hanging scroll. The subject matter was based on something that we saw in our back garden; black-capped chickadees delicately resting on scouring rush horsetails (Equisetum hyemale). We were amazed that the chickadees could rest so easily on the horsetails. I made the frame for this painting out of red oak using pegged, hand-joined, mortise-and-tenon construction methods. I used the Japanese technique (shou-sugi-ban) of charring and oiling the oak to finish the frame. I specifically made this painting for the Matzke Gallery’s “Honey, I Shrunk the Art” 2023 show.
