ACRYLICS ON CEDAR W/RED OAK FRAME

The Skagit Valley is blessed in the fall and winter when so many bird species migrate here to feed, socialize, and await the coming of spring. We are often dazzled by the big birds like eagles, swans, and snow geese, but many smaller birds visit us as well. This is especially true of the many waterfowl species that come to spend the winter in the marshes, mudflats, and flooded fields of the valley. One such migratory visitor is the dunlin. Imagine a cloud of birds. With a minimum of 30,000 dunlins coming to stay, these birds' murmurations can be seen by those who know where to look and what to look for. This painting celebrates these small but active seasonal shorebirds. The designs for the dunlins were inspired by both Northwest Coast Native and Celtic art traditions. The waves are my take from Japanese Rinpa school paintings. The frame was made out of red oak using pegged, hand-joined, mortise-and-tenon construction methods. The Japanese technique (shou-sugi-ban) of charring and oiling the oak was used to finish the frame.
