ACRYLICS ON CEDAR W/RED OAK FRAME
FALL 2024
The world is full of fishing buddies, those close friends who especially enjoy each other’s companionship, and maybe even share a sense of competition. I’m sure the same goes for great blue heron buddies. The design for my herons was inspired by Northwest Coast Native, Celtic, and Japanese art traditions. The stream in which they fish follows the Japanese Rinpa-school tradition of how to paint flowing water. I made the frame out of red oak using pegged, hand-joined, mortise-and-tenon construction methods and used the Japanese technique (shou-sugi-ban) of charring and oiling the oak to finish the frame. I specifically made this painting for the Matzke Gallery’s “Honey, I Shrunk the Art” 2024 show.
