HERON DREAM ACRYLICS ON BIRCH PLYWOOD W/HEMLOCK FRAME SPRING 2023
I was recently reading Gary Wyatt and Robert Davidson’s beautiful book Echoes of the Supernatural: The Graphic Art of Robert Davidson and to say that I was inspired would be a drastic understatement. Davidson’s big, bold, and colorful designs took my breath away, and thus I chose to “go big” and paint a heron design in homage to Davidson’s work. Herons have always been one of my favorite subjects and seemed best for this larger painting. The works of Japanese ukiyo-e designer Tōshūsai Sharaku played a large role in the overall composition. The paintings of Ito Jakuchu from his Colorful Realm series of hanging scrolls gave inspiration for the feather detailing, and St. John’s Eagle from the Book of Kells provided design elements as well as inspiration for my design. I surrounded the painting in a simple hemlock frame (painted black) to protect the birch plywood.
