ACRYLICS ON CEDAR W/RED OAK FRAME

Upon entering the forest, one of the first things one notices is just how quiet it is. Few of us have the opportunity to experience quiet in our busy daily lives, and this presents a very special opportunity. Even birdsong is much less than what we hear in our back yards. Amid the quiet, the song of a lone red-breasted nuthatch takes on a magnified quality. One cannot help but take notice and be enthralled by its beautiful song. This painting attempts to capture that very special moment, deep in the quiet forest. The design for my nuthatch was inspired by Northwest Coast Native, Celtic, and Japanese art traditions. I used a tarashikomi-effect, commonly employed by Japanese Rinpa School artists, to paint the spruce tree’s trunk. I made the frame for this painting out of red oak using pegged, hand-joined, mortise-and-tenon construction methods. I used the Japanese technique (shou-sugi-ban) of charring and oiling the oak to finish the frame.
