ACRYLICS ON CEDAR W/RED OAK FRAME
SUMMER 2024
Plovers (chidori) painted over water and in conjunction with the moon is a frequently used Japanese motif seen in painting, on textiles, and on ceramics. They are traditionally classed as a winter motif, but often show up on other seasonal items to evoke the approaching winter. The design for the plover was inspired by both Northwest Coast Native and Celtic art traditions. The water design was inspired by paintings from several Japanese Rinpa School artists including Kamisaka Sekka, while a tarashikomi-effect was used in painting the moon I made the frame for this painting out of red oak using pegged, hand-joined, mortise-and-tenon construction methods. I used the Japanese technique (shou-sugi-ban) of charring and oiling the oak to finish the frame. I specifically made this painting for the Matzke Gallery’s “Honey, I Shrunk the Art” 2024 show.
