ACRYLICS ON CEDAR W/RED OAK FRAME
WINTER 2022-23
Ravens, like all corvids, are extremely intelligent birds. Not only do they have the ability to recognize individual humans, but they also can remember past interactions with them. This seems to be all a part of their complex social behaviors. They also have a preference to stay in pairs, rather than in large groups like their crow relatives. As opportunistic feeders, they keep a steady watch for a chance to obtain food, and will never pass up a free meal. I have always loved watching them as well, and their rich, throaty calls are wonderful to hear. Kawanabe Kyosai’s Two Ravens on a Plum Tree inspired me to paint a pair of ravens. The designs for my ravens were influenced by both Northwest Coast Native and Celtic art traditions. I made the frame for this painting out of red oak using pegged, hand-joined, mortise-and-tenon construction methods. I used the Japanese technique (shou-sugi-ban) of charring and oiling the oak to finish the frame.
