ACRYLICS ON CEDAR W/RED OAK FRAME
SPRING 2023
Pacific harbor seals are solitary creatures except when they haul out or during the breeding season. Because they stay close to shore, harbor seals are frequently seen and are fun to watch. A favorite pastime of mine is to whistle when seeing them in an attempt to capture their attention. In general, they seem to be as interested in us as we are in them. The design for the seal was inspired by both Northwest Coast Native and Celtic art traditions. As a big fan of Manx-born, Arts and Crafts designer Archibald Knox, I was inspired by his work in pewter and silver to include Celtic Revival-style entrelac for the internal details of the seal. The frame for this painting was made out of red oak using pegged, hand-joined, mortise-and-tenon construction methods. I used Minwax blue, water-based Island Water stain to finish the frame. This painting is a modified smaller version of another painting to come later. I specifically made it for the Matzke Gallery Spring 2023 show.
