STRENGTH IN NUMBERS ACRYLICS ON BIRCH PLY W/HEMLOCK FRAME SUMMER 2019
I think many of us tend to root for the underdog as we’ve all been in that position at one time or another. And there is something appealing in hoping that the underdog will be the winner because if or when it happens, we are pleasantly surprised. Also, at one time or another, most of us have seen a group of smaller birds mobbing a larger hawk or even an eagle. Their persistence and tenacity make up for the raw power possessed by the larger raptor. So, in this instance, who is the underdog? Who do we root for? We recently saw a group of crows mobbing a red-tailed hawk and it inspired me to paint the experience. Many of the elements in this painting were inspired by Celtic art but this design is really based on life in the Pacific Northwest. I surrounded the painting in a simple hemlock frame (painted black) to protect the birch plywood. This painting has been treated with Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane to give protection from sunlight, rain and moisture, and temperature changes. The finish is clear satin. This makes it suitable for showing outdoors in a protected area.
