ACRYLICS ON SHIKISHI BOARD
SPRING 2024
May is my favorite “weather” month. The temperatures are getting warm and mild, and the amount of daylight is approaching its maximum as the summer solstice is no longer very far away. As the lilacs finish up, the wisteria is beginning to bloom, and today we saw our first swallowtail butterfly of the season. This reminded me of a beautiful Momoyama Period kosode designed with both wisteria and butterflies. With their perfect timing, the kosode and the swallowtail sighting inspired me to paint a similar scene on a shikishi board. Shikishi are an ancient Japanese format used for painting and writing poetry. Sometimes referred to as a “poem card,” they have been in use since at least the eighth century. Shikishi boards are made from fine Japanese handmade art paper laminated to hard board backing. They are edged with a strip of gold paper and are traditionally used for sumi paintings, haiku poems, calligraphy, and watercolor paintings.
