ACRYLICS ON CEDAR W/RED OAK FRAME
SPRING 2024
For some people, spring does not begin until they see their first red-winged blackbird. I enjoy seeing them arrive in groups of males, flashing their showy red and yellow wing patches. Once we see them, true spring weather can’t be far behind, can it? It is especially nice seeing these blackbirds in the wetlands along with the remnants of last-year’s cattails all fluffed out. The black and red coloration marks a strong contrast to the golden-brown of the cattails. The designs for my red-winged blackbirds were inspired by Northwest Coast Native, Celtic, and Japanese art traditions. I used a tarashikomi, or “dripping in”, effect for the branches in the Rinpa tradition. I made the frame out of red oak using pegged, hand-joined, mortise-and-tenon construction methods. I used the Japanese technique (shou-sugi-ban) of charring and oiling the oak to finish the frame
