AUTUMN CARPET
ACRYLICS ON CEDAR W/RED OAK FRAME
FALL 2014
While Leigh and I were walking through Pioneer Park this fall, we were struck by the beauty of the fallen Bigleaf Maple leaves covering the black asphalt road.  It was if we were walking on a carpet.  This made me think that it wasn’t too long ago that we were admiring those same leaves still on the trees.  Back in June those maple leaves influenced me to do a painting based on the designs of Lucia Mathews.  Her designs for furniture and wooden objects and made by the Furniture Shop were beautiful and inspiring (see Wendy Kaplan, The Art That Is Life, ©1987, page 20, for a Mathews designed box top showing a multicolored array of poppies).  Now I have been inspired by her, again, to paint the fallen leaves of these maples and to complete the season. I kept the size and the frame design the same as June’s Lucia’s Maple painting.  I made the frame out of red oak using pegged, hand-joined, mortise-and-tenon construction methods.  I used the Japanese technique (shou-sugi-ban) of charring and oiling the oak to finish the frame.

DIMENSIONS:          HEIGHT:  18 inches
                                  WIDTH:  10 3/8 inches

                                                               PRICE $275
