ACRYLICS ON PINE W/ COPPER
(SPRING 2013)
I was reading The Glasgow Style by Gerald & Celia Larner (©1979, plate 100) and ran across a wall sconce designed by Talwin Morris for Walter Blackie’s Hill House (designed by C.R. Mackintosh). This reminded me that I wanted to make a sconce with a peacock design and this was good opportunity to do so. I had originally planned to make the sconce with an electric light fixture but changed to instead make a pair of candle-powered sconces. My peacock design was inspired by the Talwin Morris metal panel on his sconce (I believe that his design is an Art Nouveau stylized peacock) but adapted to fit the Northwest Coast formline structure. Spirals and other Celtic elements were also included in my design. I placed a hammered copper square at the base of each peacock to better reflect the candle light.
