ACRYLICS ON CEDAR W/RED OAK FEAME
WINTER 2023
Winter in the Skagit Valley is an excellent time to observe Northern Harriers in flight as they patrol the skies above the fields. There may just be more harriers around at this time, or harriers may be easier to spot now because the fields below them have either been harvested or are freshly tilled in preparation for the next crops, making for good hunting. Regardless, it’s a wonderful time of year for watching raptors. My harrier is hunting above the hills in a focused pursuit of prey; let’s wish it luck. The design for my harrier was inspired by Northwest Coast Native, Celtic, and Japanese art traditions. Japanese Rinpa School painters were very influential to both design elements and the overall composition. Ogata Korin and Sakai Hoitsu inspired my flowing stream, while Tawaraya Sotatsu’s painted screen Mount Utsu and an Edo-period kimono design were the inspirations behind the background. I made the frame for this painting out of red oak using pegged, hand-joined, mortise-and-tenon construction methods. I used the Japanese technique (shou-sugi-ban) of charring and oiling the oak to finish the frame.
