FALL 2019
The Skagit Valley is rich in bird activity and attracts birders from all over. In the last few years, tours and workshops have been developed during the winter season to celebrate our avian abundance (visit Birds of Winter at http://birdsofwinter.org/ for more information). Some of my favorite birds to watch are the raptors that patrol the valley. They provide me with a constant source of artistic inspiration. Recently, considerable hawk activity motivated me to turn to the long tradition of Japanese kacho-e (bird & flower) paintings, and this is the result. The composition is my interpretation of a woodcut by Suiko Fukuda. The design for the hawk was inspired by both Northwest Coast Native and Celtic art traditions. The tarashikomi-like effect used on the tree bough was inspired by works of Rinpa School artists, and my pine needles were based on countless works of Japanese art. I surrounded the painting with a simple hemlock frame (painted black) to protect the birch plywood. This painting has been treated with Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane to give protection from sunlight, rain and moisture, and temperature changes. The finish is clear satin. This makes it suitable for hanging outdoors in a protected area, if so desired.
