ACRYLICS ON CEDAR W/RED OAK FRAME
WINTER 2020-21
Who can say what meaning hides within our dreams? I recently had a dream of birds floating on water. When I awoke, I planned to base a painting on it, and this is the result. Surprisingly, the birds in the dream were quail-like, which doesn’t make sense as they are not aquatic birds, but then again, do all dreams make sense? My mom was the one for trying to interpret dreams. I wonder what she would have made of this? I based my “dream birds” on a Celtic design of a capercaillie from The Book of Kells (see George Bain’s Celtic Art: The Methods of Construction (©1997, p. 110). I also made reference to Japanese and Northwest Coast Native works in its creation. The design for the water follows in the style of Ogata Korin and the Rinpa School. I made the frame for this painting out of red oak using pegged, hand-joined, mortise-and-tenon construction methods. I used the Japanese technique (shou-sugi-ban) of charring and oiling the oak to finish the frame.
