The Skagit Valley, nestling in a bowl surrounded by the Cascades to the east and the Olympics to the west, is a fascinating place to live. The lighting is usually spectacular as it highlights its key features. On occasion, the sunlight striking the mists rising from the valley, foothills, and mountains produces curtains of gold. Recently, while reading the Catalogue of the Feinberg Collection of Japanese Art (edited by Rachel Saunders, ©2021), I came across a painting by Rinpa artist Suzuki Kiitsu that I had never seen before (cat. no. 110, pages 118-19). Kiitsu’s Mountainous Landscape reminded me of some of the Skagit views I’ve witnessed, and it inspired me to create this interpretation of the Cascades seen from the Skagit Valley. I adhered to Kiitsu’s basic palette of gold, blue and greens to create my version of his late Edo period work. I made the frame out of red oak using pegged, hand-joined, mortise-and-tenon construction methods. I used the Japanese technique (shou-sugi-ban) of charring and oiling the oak to finish the frame.
