ACRYLICS ON CEDAR W/RED OAK FRAME
WINTER 2024
Harriers patrolling the skies above Skagit Valley fields is a common sight in winter. The harvested or recently-plowed fields below them must make for good hunting. For us, it’s a great time of year for raptor-watching. As I was painting Harrier Hunting the Hills, I found that I really liked the looks of the harrier and river before the rest of the painting was finished. Thus, I decided to paint another harrier with the river below, leaving the background unpainted. The design for my harrier was inspired by Northwest Coast Native, Celtic, and Japanese art traditions. Japanese Rinpa School painters Ogata Korin and Sakai Hoitsu helped to inspire my flowing river. I made the frame for this painting out of red oak using pegged, hand-joined, mortise-and-tenon construction methods. I used the Japanese technique (shou-sugi-ban) of charring and oiling the oak to finish the frame.
