CALLING ALL FROGS
ACRYLICS ON CEDAR W/RED OAK FRAME
FALL 2023

The fall rains have come and the frogs are talking!  After our extended summer drought, the return of the rains is a welcome event for everyone.  The local Pacific tree frogs are making their joy known to anyone who will listen—and listen we do.  The sound of frogs calling is such an emotive sound and is sure to bring a smile to all who hear.  We accidentally brought two of these cute little frogs into the house.  They were on our ladder and hitched an unexpected ride to a place no one wanted them to be.  Luckily, they were returned to their home among the bittersweet nightshade vines without too much stress (and without an adverse encounter with Holly the cat).  My inspiration, especially for the frog pond, for both design and composition come from Ogata Korin, Sakai Hoitsu, and the other painters of the Japanese Rinpa School. I made the frame out of red oak using pegged, hand-joined, mortise-and-tenon construction methods.  I used the Japanese technique (shou-sugi-ban) of charring and oiling the oak to finish the frame.
