ACRYLICS ON CEDAR W/RED OAK FRAME
FALL 2023
Fall is here! The days are getting shorter and the evening air noticeably cooler. One sure sign of autumn is the sound of geese passing overhead. Their calls to each other are also a call to ourselves to begin the seasonal transition. We have noticed so many more Canada geese migrating than we ever can remember. Soon the snow geese will be arriving and settling into the Skagit Valley to spend the winter. Some places mark the fall with the change in color of the leaves, but we are additionally blessed here in that the birds also let us know of the changes. The designs for my geese were influenced by a fusion of Northwest Coast Native, Celtic, and Japanese art traditions. I made the frame for this painting out of red oak using pegged, hand-joined, mortise-and-tenon construction methods. I used the Japanese technique (shou-sugi-ban) of charring and oiling the oak to finish the frame.
